About Our Theaters

The Historic Hoover Theater and Theatre on San Pedro Square

Two Different Venues!

Stagelight Productions will perform in two different venues, depending upon the circumstances of a particular production: the Historic Hoover Theater and Theatre on San Pedro Square.

The Historic Hoover Theater

Located in the heart of San Jose's beautiful Rose Garden district, the newly renovated Historic Hoover Theater serves as the artistic jewel in the crown of this strong community. The theatre now sits on the Southeastern corner of the Old Hoover Middle School campus, which was originally the school gym. The school was built in 1931 and designed by renowned architect William H. Weeks, who also designed the San Jose landmark St. Claire and De Anza hotels.

San Jose designated the Old Hoover School as a city landmark in 1995. The right wing of the Old Hoover School complex currently serves as a center for community education classes. The left wing of the complex serves as the Historic Hoover Theater. After a $6 million renovation, the Historic Hoover Theater was officially inaugurated on May 21, 2004. Since that time, its use as a theater has grown remarkably, with at least four companies making active use of the venue. Stagelight Productions is pleased that it will be able to mount several productions each year at the Historic Hoover Theater.

The theater is located at 1635 Park Avenue, San Jose 95124. There is free parking next to the theater at all times. Although alcoholic beverages are not permitted to be served, Stagelight Productions will provide soft drinks, coffee, tea and and an assortment of snacks for a modest donation before, during and after a performance. The theater is located on the ground floor and is fully accessible.

Theatre On San Pedro Square

Nestled in the heart of downtown San Jose, Theatre on San Pedro Square is an intimate 150+ seat theater with a reputation for presenting interesting and creative productions. Prior to 2000, the theater was an improv comedy venue called The Last Laugh. Current proprietor Gary DeMattei has used the theater since its renovation in 2000, including a 9-month production of I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, as well as productions of Cabaret, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and Forever Plaid.

Under an agreement with the City of San Jose Redevelopment Agency, the theater is available for use by outside non-profit arts organizations for six months out of each year at no charge. This generous opportunity offered by Theatre on San Pedro Square and the Redevelopment Agency is without precedent in the Silicon Valley area, where venue rental costs are typically out of reach for most smaller theater companies. Stagelight is both lucky and pleased to be able to produce some of its works at Theatre on San Pedro Square.

The theater is located at 29 North San Pedro Street, San Jose 95110. There is free parking across the street after 6 PM on weekdays and all weekend, so access to the theater doesn't require additional parking charges. The theater boasts a full bar and an assortment of snacks available both before, during and after a performance. There is also an elevator to provide access for disabled and elderly patrons. However, all bathroom facilities are downstairs which should be kept in mind when attending the theater.
