The Hair tribe will consist of between 16 and 20 male
and female performers, minimum age 18 at the time of
audition (photographic identification will be required),
with no stated maximum age but able to portray characters
between the ages of 18 and 24. A wide ethnic diversity
is strongly desired for this production (there are several
specific roles requiring performers of color, but alternative
casting will be considered for all roles). Theatrical
training is very helpful, but not strictly mandatory
(this was also the case with the original Broadway production).
What we will be looking for:
- a strong singing voice
- an ability to move well onstage
(while Hair is not strictly a "dance" show,
it is very physical and includes a significant amount
of stylized movement)
- an energetic and outgoing personality
- a willingness to participate in experimental approaches
to staging and dance
- a tolerance for and openess to
the ideas expressed in the production
- Claude – male, tenor
- A nice, young hippie who loves his hair,
destined for the draft, and Berger's best friend.
- Berger – male, tenor
- The leader of the tribe, an anarchist,
loves his pot, and Claude's best friend.
- Woof – male, high baritone/tenor (a good falsetto is desired)
- Energetic, gay or bi (its not clear!),
fun-loving, far-out, freaky.
- Hud – male, black, baritone
- The "in-your-face" African-American tribe member,
more into play than politics, but definitely aware.
- Sheila – female, mezzo/belt
- A street-smart student and social activist
(an early feminist?), but totally in love with Berger.
- Jeannie – female, alto
- Wise, sweet, creative, pregnant, a follower, but
she also acts as the "greek chorus" of the tribe.
- Chrissy – female, mezzo
- A true flower child and street urchin who misses her former lover.
- Dionne – female, black, Motown belt
- Sassy African-American girl, should be able to
handle a strong Dianna Ross impersonation.
Other members of the tribe will portray many supporting roles including
moms, dads, high school principals, policemen, an "oldies" quartet,
a white girls' "trio", an ethnic Motown girls' trio, army sergeant, Abe Lincoln,
John Wilkes Booth, Clark Gable, Scarlett O'Hara, Aretha Franklin, Colonel George
Custer, monks, nuns, astronauts, a native American Indian and more.
Almost everyone will need to be able to handle some solo vocal lines.
Vocal
Please be prepared to sing a representative uptempo rock song or
Broadway song with a rock beat. If you are auditioning for Claude,
Sheila, or Chrissy, you may alternatively prepare a rock ballad or,
if possible, both.
Please do not audition with any song from Hair.
A piano accompanist will be provided (please bring your own sheet music),
or you may provide a karaoke-style CD (no vocals on the CD, not
even backing vocals, please).
A capella-style auditions will not be permitted.
Dance
You will be asked to learn and repeat a short dance movement during the audition.
Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes for moving and dancing.
Monologue

for the audition monologues that are taken from the script of Hair.
You will be asked to read one of these monologues during your audition.
No other monologues are required or permitted.
Production Information Back To Top
This production is directed by Jon Rosen, who recently directed
the successful production of Tomfoolery at Theatre on San Pedro
Square in association with Studio Theatre of California,
the coproducer of Hair.
Rehearsals begin Saturday, April 28. Because of the nature of this
show, the rehearsal period is fairly long. The first three weeks of rehearsal
will be relatively light (no more than 2-3 rehearsals a week), focusing on
training, exercises, analysis and vocals. The next three weeks will focus
on dance and stage movement, as well as blocking, with a slightly more
aggressive schedule (3-4 rehearsals a week). The final four weeks leading
up to "hell" week and opening will be very intensive, probably 4-5
rehearsals a week.
The exact rehearsal schedule is still being determined. Almost all
rehearsals will take place at the Historic Hoover Theater.
A preliminary schedule will be available at auditions, but even that
schedule will probably be adjusted during the rehearsal process. Please
bring your calendar or other scheduling information as you will be
required to fill out a conflict form either online or at the audition.
The show performs July 14 - August 19 at both the Theatre on
San Pedro Square and the Historic Hoover Theater. There will be from
2-6 performances a week, including several days of double performances.
There is a mandatory hold-over availability requirement
through Friday, August 24.
This is a non-Equity production. There will be a stipend for
each tribe member based on ticket sales.
The expected stipend range is between $100 and $400
per person for the run of the show.
Audition Sign-up Procedure Back To Top
Preregistration for HAiR auditions is now closed!
Please come to any of the remaining auditions as close
as possible to the starting time and you will be taken
first-come, first-served (except for actors with appointments).
You may fill out all of the audition forms at the theater.
Please make sure you bring your calendar or planner to the
auditions. You will be required to complete a conflicts form
and this is very important to help in casting and to determine
how well the rehearsal and performance schedule will fit with
every tribe members' other commitments.
FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)Back To Top
What if I have a conflict?
Don't let that stop you from auditioning! Obviously, if your conflicts are major,
(for instance, if you had to miss all of opening weekend) that would almost
certainly be an obstacle to participation. However, one of the hallmarks of Hair
is its flexibility, and we will be doing everything we can to maintain that
for our production. So even if you have a few expected performance conflicts, depending
on the role you are interested in, we may be able to work around your conflicts.
Just be sure to let us know what your conflicts are and we will take that into consideration.
If you really want to be in Hair, we would love to have you try out!
Is nudity required?
We plan to stage a production that is faithful to the original
Broadway version, which included scenes of partial and
full nudity (the first to ever appear on a Broadway stage).
Hair has much to say about being comfortable
with who you are in your own body, and nudity was used
in the original production as part of that statement.
What is not generally known is that nudity was never required
of most of the performers, and that will be the case in this
production. We certainly hope that some (or even all)
of the tribe may become comfortable enough with themselves
through the rehearsal and performance process that at some
point, even if initially reluctant, they may attempt the nude
scenes, but it will never be mandatory.
Also, even if you are willing to do the nude scenes,
what you look like without clothes
will have absolutely no influence on our
casting decisions. During auditions, you
will be asked whether you are willing to perform in the nude
scenes, but there will be no requirement to actually disrobe
during auditions or callbacks. We are not casting for a Las
Vegas revue, but rather a serious musical theater production.
